PARKS

Kirby Preserve at Old Reid Park

Ongoing: Brush and honeysuckle work began to clear and reconstruct the pond peninsulas and banks, enhancing the overall natural landscape and use of the park. Original native tree species and grasses will be planted on the banks to create shade, cool the water and improve the aquatic habitat. The project will create a habitat for native waterfowl and deter non-native ducks and geese from congregating along the lagoon banks, which causes overgrazing and erosion.

Snyder Park Waiting Station

The Snyder Park Waiting Station was damaged when a very large Hackberry tree fell from the treeline to the south of the building. National Trail has been working with the City’s insurance company since the day following the fall. The damage was initially thought to be to the roof and wrap-around porch, but after inspection, it was found that there was damage to the structure of the roof as well as the limestone foundation. It took quite a bit of time to find contractors that could mill the type of wood needed for the repairs. We have learned that the estimates have been approved by the adjuster and insurance company. Contractors are waiting for materials to be available and then we will be placed on the construction schedule. We understand this has been a very long process and we are all frustrated at the length of time this has taken. It is important to make sure that the building is repaired properly by qualified contractors so that the Waiting Station is standing for generations to come.

Mitchell Meadows

WINTER & SPRING 2024: Pardon our mess, but we’re officially under construction at the Buck Creek Nature Park. We are excited to begin updating and adding new nature play features. Please stay away from materials, nature structures, and elements are in the process of upgrade or construction. We hope to have the park reopen by the fall.
