Q: What is a Ranger?

A: Generally speaking, a Ranger is a law enforcement officer, whose venue and responsibilities center on natural resources.

 

Q: What does CCPD stand for?

A: Clark County Park District.

 

Q: What legal authority does a Ranger have?

A: The scope of authority of a CCPD Ranger has been established by the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) under chapter 1545.   The ORC has established that Rangers are Ohio peace officers or more commonly known as “POLICE OFFICERS”. Rangers have the same police powers as other police officers throughout the State of Ohio. Rangers who announce themselves as POLICE or PARK POLICE are attempting to let it be known their authority as POLICE OFFICERS and make it clear to individuals that they encounter on a day to day basis.

 

Q: What are the duties of a Ranger?

A: CCPD Rangers are trained in law enforcement and have knowledge of forestry and conservation. Rangers use these skills to preserve the peace, protect life and property. Rangers enforce state and local laws and the rules and regulations of the CCPD and the NTPRD. Rangers are authorized to issue warnings, whether verbal or written, Rangers are also authorized to issue citations, make arrests and investigate crimes ranging from minor misdemeanors to serious felonies. A cooperative agreement between CCPD and NTPRD and the City Of Springfield allow and authorize Rangers to patrol and protect the parks within the City of Springfield, Ohio.
